C H ‘Pat’ Patterson
Professor Cecil Holden Patterson, who died aged 93 on May 26, 2006, was one of the great evangelists of the client-centred/person-centred approach to psychotherapy and human relations originated by Carl Rogers. The following biography was supplied by Pat, as one of our authors. C. H. 'Pat' Patterson received his BA in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1938, his MA in child psychology in 1945 and his PhD in counselling psychology in 1955, both from the University of Minnesota. He was a Psychological Assistant in the US Airforce, a Clinical Psychologist in the US Army and the US Veterans Administration, and a Counseling Psychologist in the Veterans Administration. From 1956 to 1978 he was Associate Professor and Professor at the University of Illinois, where he was chairman of the counselling psychology program and director of the rehabilitation counselling program and thereafter Professor Emeritus. He has been Distinguished Visiting Professor at California State University at San Bernadino and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was Fulbright Senior Lecturer at Aston University (England) and Haceteppe University (Turkey). He has been a member of the American Psychological Association since 1944 and was President of APA's Division of Counseling Psychology (1972-73), which presented him with the Leona Tyler Award in 1994.
